And I began to see things in a way that let me hold the world without me in it.” By using voice over to tell the plot of the film, it will guide the audience easily in the direction of what is really going on in the film. The connections, sometimes tenuous, sometimes made at great cost, but often magnificent, that happened after i was gone. For example when Susie was describing how everyone she knew down on earth were moving on with their lives while she was still stuck between heaven and earth with her body locked in a safe in her murderers basement, she described the living as, ‘The Lovely Bones’, “ These were the lovely bones that had grown around my absence. The use of voice over was really useful because the protagonist, Susie, would be telling the story throughout the film and would say things as if they were a poem. The director uses symbolism to help the audience understand what is going on and who the film is talking about at the time. The film involves lots of symbolism and an example of this is the charm off of Susies bracelet, it symbolises her own life and her murderer plays with the charm every time he thinks of the day he murdered Susie Salmon. Even though the film is just over two hours long, the film doesn’t bore you or feel like its dragging on. The film has great visuals (the footage of ‘the in-between’ and they way that the film showed susie after her death next to her murderer, George Harvey, who was basically bathing himself in mud and Susies blood after committing the crime) which really catches the eye and gives the audience a better grip on what is happening in the film.
I find that there is just enough thrill to keep the audience entertained and awake in the movie theatre, but not so much to scare anyone and keep them awake for the rest of the night.
The choice of music was perfect for the film sad/dramatic music when something mournful was going on (eg, at the end of the film when Susie had put herself into her friends body, Ruth Connors, and both Susie and her crush, Ray, were quoting the letter that Susie never read when she was alive, “ If I had but an hour of love, If that be all is given me, An hour of love upon this earth … I would give my love to thee.”) and fast adrenaline ridden music when something scary is going on (eg, when Susies sister was looking around her murderers house for evidence of the crime and the murderer, George Harvey, arrived back home and he almost caught the younger sister, now that was scary!). These strengths consist of The Lovely Bones having a great story line a great idea and a change in the other types of films that were being produced at the time (eg, a lot of the films produced around the same time mainly consisted of drama, romance and comedy).
I personally enjoy watching films about crime so I believe there are more strengths and positive things about this film than weaknesses and negatives. From start to finish, this film is full of suspense, drama, heart pumping activity, love between a father and daughter, humour and the love between a teenage boy and a teenage girl. She watches over them because she has unfinished work to do kiss a boy from her school that she has a crush on, and to indicate to her family who her murderer is. Susie watches over her friends, family and her killer from a place called, “The In-between”, which is located between heaven and earth. The Lovely Bones is a bone chilling film about a 14 year old girl, Susie Salmon, who was murdered by her creepy neighbour.
